Unique architecture of Tenerife: Discover the Island’s most iconic buildings

Tenerife’s unique architecture reflects the Island’s rich history and cultural diversity. As you enter the Island’s capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife you will see the Auditorium of Tenerife. Designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, this impressive auditorium has become a modern symbol of the Island. Its innovative design, inspired by forms found in nature and movement, makes it a required stop for lovers of contemporary architecture.



Of a similar nature, the city also offers the TEA, the Tenerife Arts Space. This work by architects Herzog & De Meuron combines the modernity of the space with large doses of functionality and utility. It is one of the most important libraries on the Island and offers users renowned conference rooms and exhibitions.

Do not leave the city without making a stop at the Castle of San Cristobal, built in the sixteenth century to defend the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife against pirate attacks. Just ten kilometres away in San Cristobal de La Laguna, you can visit a historic complex declared a World Heritage site in 1999, a unique example of a unwalled colonial city. There, places such as the Mudejar Church of the Conception, consecrated in 1511, and the Cathedral of La Laguna, a neo-classical and neo-Gothic jewel await you. The Cathedral's high towers and incredible interior are two things that you will certainly never forget.



Your check-list should include the Palacio de Nava, the Instituto Canarias Cabrera Pinto and the Casa Museo Cayetano Gomez Felipe, a clear example of traditional 18th century Canarian house and museum of antiquities.

Heading north, in the town of La Orotava, visit the Casa de los Balcones. This Canarian colonial house is known for its beautiful carved wooden balconies. Built in the 17th century, the Casa de los Balcones is an excellent example of traditional Canary Islands architecture and houses a museum of local crafts and historical artefacts.



Another highlight is the Pyramid of Arona in the town of Playa de las Americas. Designed by architect Santiago Amon, this unique triangular structure houses a popular venue for events and spectacles. It stands out in the coastal landscape of Tenerife with its bold, contemporary design.

Finally, if you enjoy buildings next to the sea, you should not miss the César Manrique Maritime Park in Santa Cruz or Lago Martiánez in Puerto de la Cruz.
